What is a Wisconsin title number, and where do you find it?

Short answer

A Wisconsin title number is the unique number WisDOT gives a title when it issues it, and it is printed in the upper left corner of the title, just below the VIN. It can be letters, numbers or a mix. You need it to use WisDOT's online title system with a Wisconsin title. It is not the VIN, and if the title is lost you do not need the number to order a replacement.

Where to look

Turn the title face up and look at the top left. The VIN sits there, and the title number is printed directly under it. WisDOT's online FAQ describes it as a unique number it pairs with the VIN and other data to store the vehicle's record.

The one mistake people make is typing the VIN into the title number box, because the two sit right next to each other. The VIN describes the car; the title number points to this particular title document.

Title number, VIN and plate number are three different things

Which one a form wants depends on what it is doing. Online titling asks for the title number. A replacement title asks for the VIN and plate number. WisDOT's title search and lien search ask for the VIN.

  • VIN: assigned by the manufacturer, 17 characters on standard vehicles, stamped on the car and printed on every title it ever gets.
  • Title number: assigned by WisDOT to the title it issued, printed under the VIN on a Wisconsin title.
  • Plate number: tied to registration, shown on your plates and registration certificate.

When you actually need the title number

Mainly for eMV Public, WisDOT's online title and plate application, when the car has a Wisconsin title. If the car has an out-of-state title instead, the online system asks for the VIN and the state that issued the title. WisDOT's FAQ is specific: enter the state printed on the title, not where you bought the car.

After an online application you still mail the original title, signed by the seller, with the printed receipt to WisDOT-eMV Public, P.O. Box 7907, Madison WI 53707-7907. The online step does not replace the paper.

If you do not have the title

WisDOT's online FAQ says that without a Wisconsin title or title number, you cannot use eMV Public. That is where people stall, hunting for a number when the real problem is the missing paper.

If you are the owner on record and lost the title, you do not need the number. Form MV2119 asks for the VIN and plate number, and a replacement costs $20. If a loan was added on or after July 30, 2012, the lender holds the title and you only have a Confirmation of Ownership, which cannot be used to transfer the car.

If you bought a car and the seller never handed over a title, finding a number will not help. The seller has to replace the title and sign it to you, or you start down the bonded title route.

Common questions

Do I need the title number to check whether my title was issued?

No. WisDOT's title search uses the VIN plus your Wisconsin driver license or ID number (or FEIN for a business) and shows the date a title was last processed.

Can WisDOT give me the title number over a text or email?

Be careful with any message about your vehicle. WisDOT warns that texts claiming to be from the DMV and demanding payment for vehicle fees are a scam.

Where is the VIN on an out-of-state title?

WisDOT's FAQ says it is usually near the top. The issuing state is usually printed at the top as well.

How long after an online application does the title arrive?

WisDOT says usually 10 to 14 business days after it finishes processing, and processing starts once it receives your mailed title, documents and payment.
