Homemade trailers: Vehicle Research Unit Wisconsin Department of Transportation PO Box 8070 Madison, WI 53708-8070

Order of steps

  1. 1. Weigh the trailer with the heaviest load you carry.
  2. 2. 3,000 pounds or less and not for hire: registration is optional. Decide whether you want a title anyway.
  3. 3. Titling a homemade trailer: collect the receipts, write the statement and take the photos.
  4. 4. Fill in and sign the MV1 and write the check to Registration Fee Trust.
  5. 5. Mail the packet to the Vehicle Research Unit and keep copies.

Check before you mail

  • Receipts that do not show sales tax paid, with no explanation for parts you already owned.
  • A homemade trailer bill of sale missing the year built or the price.
  • Photos that miss a side or the hitch.
  • Weighing the empty trailer instead of the trailer and its load.

About this checklist

A trailer that weighs 3,000 pounds or less with its load, and is not used for hire or rental, is exempt from registration in Wisconsin, so you may not need a title. WisDOT still says every trailer should have one.

If you choose to title a trailer you built, WisDOT has its own homemade trailer checklist, mailed to the Vehicle Research Unit.

Each line comes from WisDOT's own forms and pages or the Wisconsin statutes listed below. It does not choose options on a form for you, and WisDOT makes the final call on every application.
